Ok, found the problem for anyone who is interested. After playing
around some more (which I won't go into, unless someone really wants
me to), and noting the results, I then did some googling, and found
the following:

I may take the permanent solution described in the above link, and
move to a 2.4.x kernel, though the uml patches for 2.4.x aren't as
up-to-date as the code actively being developed in the official 2.6.x
tree.
