Debian installation with a hardware synth for speakup

If I recall, your original question was why did the apollo synth work
for installation but not once the system was up and running, right? I
think that may be because the stock debian kernel has a bug that causes
serial synths to fail. For some reason, they fixed it in the installer
but not for the stock kernels.
