ubuntu 11.10 speakup and orca don't work together

When I do that it respondes 

running in system mode, but disallow exit not set
running in system mode but disallow module loading not set 
running in system mode, forceably disabling SHM mode
running in system mode, forceably disabling Exit title time 

All of these begin with 

pulseaudio main.c 

I go back to the unity desktop, open the gnome-terminal and type 

espeak hello 

and it gives a bunch of error messages about being unable to plug in to the socket, at the end saying 

jack server is not running or cannot be started

I hear nothing. I type orca replace, see the orca splash starting up, and hear nothing.

Suggestions?
