Hi Justin,
you could just check this:
sudo pkill -9 pulseaudio
sudo pulseaudio --system -D
the last parem is a capital D.

Does tha tget you going?
I usually if not have sound in a gnome session, control Alt T to a gnome
terminal and push backspace or espeak hello.

Good luck

Now the problem is that I cannot have speakup and orca running at the same time. it's either one or the other, I think depending on the order that I log in. If I log into unity first, orca works and speakup doesn't, and if I log on to the console first, then speakup speaks and orca doesn't.

I've been searching the internet for the last several hours for instructions on how to make pulseaudio run in systemwide mode in ubuntu 11.10, and have essentially turned up nothing. It looks like they really don't want you to figure this out. Has anyone found a solution for this problem?
