mail processing delay

Have any of you experienced the following:

Using debian squeeze, fetchmail, procmail and mutt.  Using maildir.

Issue is that if there are say more than about 20 messages when I run fetchmail, I am not seeing them in mutt.

However, they do show up sometimes several hours later.

I run fetchmail before starting mutt.

Any thoughts before I go digging through logs?
