Are the modules properly in
/lib/modules/2.6.32-5-something/kernel/drivers/staging/speakup
?
Is the speakup module properly in /etc/modules or
/etc/initramfs-tools/modules?  In the latter case, does running
gunzip < /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-something | cpio -t | grep speakup
shows the modules too?
