Did you remember to append the "speakup.synth" parameters when setting up lilo? One thing you can do is boot the CD, mount your root filesystem somewhere, and see what lilo.conf says. Also, you can check /boot/vmlinuz, and see where it points to. Usually, it's a symbolic link that points to the actual kernel after a fresh install.
