Just to save people from the hours of hell the speechd-up problem with
punctuation caused, try running speechd-up with -t, so it won't
overwrite speakup's character tables. You'll probably have to do this
from a clean boot.
The dectalk problem has existed forever, and appears to be a bug in the
firmware - once it gets in that mode, even echoing things to it won't
make it pronounce the numbers. That, and the pauses dectalk makes when
being sent a process speech command, make it a synth that I'm starting
to hate.
