dvdrecord is a fork of cdrecord. It is cdrecord modified to burn dvd's.
dvd+rwtools is good for burning dvd+ and dvd- r & rw discs on any
mmc-compliant dvd burner. Growisofs will burn to any dvd media,
although I'm not sure if it will write to dvd-ram. It even supports
blue-ray dvd's and drives as of version 7.0, which afaik dvdrecord
doesn't do, since the upstream seems to have pretty much stopped, or
maybe just slowed down development recently. I stand to be corrected,
of course. There is an up and coming library that I am helping to
develope that uses no cdrecord code at all and hopefully will burn dvd
media in the future. It is in the plan for a future release, but for
now, it only burns cd's.
HTH,
Lorenzo
