shutting off the screen on a laptop

Thanks. The card on the machine in question is a Neomagic magicgraph
128. There is a function key to switch between the lcd, and external
vga port, but that's exactly what it does. If I try it without a
external monitor connected, the lcd just flickers for a second, and
comes back on supposedly.
