Turning off the screen will usually depend on the video card installed
in the laptop. I have an ATI Radeon on my laptop, and there is a
program called radeontool that turns it on and off. As root, I type:

radeontool light off

and it goes off until I reboot. It makes the battery run much longer.
Other laptops have a function key that turns the screen on and off, but
the key varies from one laptop to another. There should also be similar
programs to radeontool for other video cards.

HTH,
Lorenzo
