Speakup patched kernel pauses while booting

Do you have sftsyn built as a module, or compiled into the kernel? If
it's in the kernel, then I'm wondering if the problem might be that
speakup is continuously sending output to /dev/softsynth, and the
system is pausing momentarily during the boot process, until the
buffers empty, and then speakup goes on. If this is the case, then
your pressing the control key is momentarily interrupting the speech,
allowing the system to continue booting. Try passing

speakup_quiet=1

as a kernel parameter, and see if that makes a difference. If it does,
then my theory is correct. If it doesn't, then I don't know what could
be causing this. Of course, if your sftsyn is built as a module, and
you're not booting with an initrd image, then my theory falls apart as
well.
