This is discussed at length in the archives. Have a look at CRT and its
associated Jaws Scripts. Its not a fre application but it doesn't cost much
and its well worth it.

Subject: linux and putty with jaws?

Hay list,
I am trying to use putty to edit some c code. There is one problem there. I
can read it, but I can't read it char for char, word for word, what ever.
How would I set jaws up to do this?
(using jaws 7)
thx,
Tyler Littlefield.
