Speakup and slackware v 11

I had sighted assistance when trying to get this to work after the
first couple tries, so to answer the question,
Yes, the cd had stopped spinning, but that doesn't address the issue
after linux was installed, I still got no speech from speakup, so had
to use the serial port to login with my note taker instead of having
it speak as it should.
Also, On the first machine I used, there were two serial ports, and I
tried them both. After that didn't work, I switched over to a machine
that had only one port, just so that wouldn't be an issue.
I'm still getting the same issue.
Once, AI did get what sounded like the welcome to slackware prompt on
the notetaker, but nothing after that, and no startup messages or the
like.
