The first thing that comes to mind is IRC, simply because some browsers can be
configured to call the user's favourite IRC client when encountering a URL
beginning with irc://.  If they are looking for a browser solution, one that
uses only the browser and not a separate client, the only answer is some sort of
client-side scripting like javascript or an applet opened by the browser, which
as we know is not accessible to all browsers.
