Speakup on AMD64

What is the status of speakup on AMD64 processors? I'm guessing from the
structure of the speakup ftp sight under the disks/fedora directory that I
will have to do an install of regular 64 bit fedora with no speech, then
install the Kernel package? Appreciate clarification and or updates on this.
