Well, Nick, I am running a Dec-Talk U S B with speakup in serial mode.  When I 
flip the switch, it says rs232.  Yes, I also notice if I am arrowing around the 
screen in review, the pitch and rate both get knocked down.  At that point 
especially moving the pitch up or down will fixit again.
I am still having an odd problem while reading a pine index with speakup, where 
either speakup or the dec-talk are swopping around the date and message number. 
We practicly got YASR running, so I will try it-and-see if the same thing 
happens.
As far as the dec-talk unit itself, they claim I can ajust the treble?  Might 
you know which command-and where will I type it?  Thanks in advance
