getting off my windows dependency

Or you could just open up a new console and work in two consoles at the same
time.  If that doesn't work, you use ctrl+z to suspend and bg to place one
process in the background.  I don't understand this tabbed browsing either.
Seems like a graphical thing, so how do you work this in the console.
