new to linux, where to begin

I have found another good use for running Linux on its own machine; as
Janina said, it is always booted and running.

I seem to have now screwed up speakup on that machine, but I can
troubleshoot by telnetting in to it which I'm doing right now from work. If
it had been a dual-boot machine, it might have not been in Linux.

Anyway, I'm not ready to ask for help with this yet, because I think I can
fix it myself.
