Chris, 

in answer to your question of 2 OS on the one laptop the answer is yes.
Based on what you say the current configuration is for your laptop, I
might suggest you take a look at VMWare. What VMWare does, is set up a
virtual machine within the current environment, and then you can install
any os on the virtual machine. This solution also illuminates the duel
boot problems.  Being a computer student, I think that you can handle
this type of setup. I suggest that you contact Keith Watson about
setting up linux on a virtual machine with VMWare because he has done it
successfully using the os's that you mentioned in your note.
