Speech-Dispatcher Questions

I'm currently using speech-dispatcher with the default configuration
and thus flite as present speech software synth. I previously
compiled flite to use the 16-bit voice instead of the 8-bit and that
makes flite sound quite a bit better. When I run 'flite "testing..."'
it speaks with the clearer 16-bit voice. When I do 'spd-say
"testing..."' I get that awful 8-bit voice. A brief look at
flite.conf and speech-dispatcher.conf did not show me a way to
override this and get the better voice. I'm convinced that flite was
configured right but I wonder about the speech-dispatcher. Any body
have an idea?
