Did you compile ALSA from source? If so, try compiling it again using
the --with-debug=detect option. This is what I do:

cd alsa-driver*
./configure --with-oss=yes --with-sequencer=yes --with-debug=detect

You didn't give much info in your post, so people can't do much to
respond to it. It helps if you tell us what you did put in your
rc.modules and modules.conf. You didn't even say what chipset your
sound card uses.

Try doing a lspci (requires pciutils) and see if it tells you the
audio chipset name and revision etc.
