courier question

I don't run the whole courier system here, just courier-imap, and
sqwebmail. However, I think I can answer your questions given what I
know about my courier-imap and sqwebmail setup.

Authcustom, according to the docs, is an interface between courier and
a custom authentication program that you've written for yourself.

I know what the docs say about configure doing it all for you, but
I've found that I needed to copy the modules I needed into place by
hand after compiling and installing. My courier-imap source is
unpacked in /usr/src, so my module binaries after compilation are
found in 
/usr/src/courier-imap-2.2.1/authlib/
. You'll find the binaries for authshadow and friends in whatever your
equivalent source directory is, just copy them over to where they need
to be, and add them to authdaemonrc. My authdaemonrc modules section
looks like this:

# The authentication modules that are linked into authdaemond.  The
# default list is installed.  You may selectively disable modules
