can't find serial port

This sound right, Glen.

I remember one time when I was attempting to get all this worked out on
a laptop. I think I was using Win 98. Under DOS, com1 was being assigned
to the serial port on the backplane of the notebook. And, indeed, I had
it working with asap and a Litetalk all loaded via the autoexec.bat.
But, once Windows started, that same serial port on the backplane was
assigned com2. So, to use the very same Litetalk synth attached to the
only db9 port device on the laptop, I had to talk com1 from dos,
including dos sessions under Windows, but use com2 from within Windows.

What was getting com1 under Windows? An IR port--even though com1 was
already assigned. Go figure.
