You could always check your system resources with both synths, one at a
time, for comparison.

No I disagree with you whole heartedly.  A hardware synth is always
going to have better performance.  When you yank on the power of the cpu
as the software synth does you do loose cpu usage.  You would be
suprised also in how many files are loaded for the software synth too.
This is not to say I won't use one but I like the fast response of the
hardware synths because if I am not mistaking I believe the synths have
a small cpu of their own.  The only thing that gets me is when the
hardware synth buffer gets full and it refuses to flush out like in a
game I have called Dopewars based on an old Dos game.  The synth has to
read quite a bit and it gets a bit full and starts to lag behind.  But
too me this is such a small price to pay that I mostly overlook it.
