question on starting up emacspeak under red hat 9

Hello, I try to launch the version of emacspeak bundeled in red hat 9, under
a terminal session running under x-windows. Both on my and my friends
computers we get the following error. Process speaker not running
We both have working sound, does anyone know what this means? We are running
very different hardware configurations so I assume it isn't a sound card
problem. Appreciate any help, as you guys made the emacspeak list sound like
an unforgiving place for newbies.
