Hi Steve,
The probable reason that you didn't get answers to those questions is because the keymap handling in speakup-cvs is in a state of flux... expect major changes in the near future as to how you modify your keymap re speakup...
That being said, let me explain a bit: keys specific to speakup currently are defined in /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/speakup/speakupmap.map which is fed to genmap. This is all part of the kernel compilation with speakup. Keys not defined in the ~/speakupmap.map file are ignored by speakup and passed to the normal kernel key-handling.
Watch cvs for new things in keymap handling for speakup.
