Synth troubles

Hi All,

I hooked my synth up to my computer, and restarted it into linux.  As the
kernel loaded I got no speech.
I hooked a tester up to the serial port, and rebooted.  The tester only
beeped for a split second, and then didn't do anything.
What's wrong?
