Tom:  You mentioned patching in speakup 1.0 before updating from cvs.  Did you compile the kernel from the speakup 1.0 package before checking out from cvs?  If so you should have been prompted for speakup that first time.  If not then I recommend you blow the tree away and compile either just from the speakup 1.0 package or from cvs.
