Hi Thomas -

I am very happy with 'lame' for encoding and decoding mp3 files. Your
slackware distribution comes with mpg123, an mp3 player, and with the sox
package which contains "play" and "rec" for playing and recording wav
files.
Check out Matt Campbell's trplayer and Realplayer8 for a text console
interface to Realaudio streams and files. You can get there from
www.linux-speakup.org
