Sorry to flood with many posts. I just saw Geoff's post and would add that
Linux has an additional feature called alias. It allows you to create your
own command with perhaps some switches built in. You could forinstance
make lsl give a file list in long format. (And dir is commonly found in
most linux distributions now.)
