which prebuilt linux boxes seem to work best?

     No, you should not do this. Then, not only would you mismatch your kernel headers, but also your C library. Then, you're basicly SCREWED! And I mean it! You may not even be able to rerun RPM to undo the damage. As other listers have said, just stay away from it, and hopefully RH will get their act together soon, or they may go down the tubes.
