Everything failed.  Even with a real root account being used the same 
behavior happens.  The really upsetting thing about this is that 
dpkg-reconfigure makes an /etc/X11/Xorg.conf.dpkg-new file as you answer 
the questions and erases it everytime the update fails.  If it would just 
write that file to disk I could do the update with a simple mv command.
