Using Nano?

Hello,
I am using the laptop version of speekup.
I don't have numpadstar or numpad enter :(. Do you happen to know the 
laptop equivalent?

I'm pretty sure the sound card is not the problem because I've heard 
speakup come out of it and pressing the volume keys bloop.
Is there a command to activate speakup or restart speekup into normal 
mode? I am guessing that there is a mode it is in that doesn't read for 
sighted people.
