hardware speech synthesizer linux kernel interface

How did you get the litetalk working with slackware 14? I have tried this 
and i get no speech at all, i use
linux speakup.synth=ltlk

am using com1 (ttyS0).

Tried with vmware and also natively by booting from the slackware dvd.
