Here is all I got from the logs -- there is no pulse audio log by
itself, but in the normal kernel logs I have
Jul 1 11:11:47 ccs pulseaudio[5859]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to
open cookie file '/home/covici/.config/pulse/cookie': No such file or
directory
Jul 1 11:11:47 ccs pulseaudio[5859]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to
load authorization key '/home/covici/.config/pulse/cookie': No such file

Jul 1 11:11:47 ccs pulseaudio[5862]: [pulseaudio] authkey.c: Failed to
load authorization key '/home/covici/.config/pulse/cookie': No such file

Jul 1 11:11:47 ccs pulseaudio[5862]: [pulseaudio] server-lookup.c:
Unable to contact D-Bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable
to autolaunch a db\us-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
Jul 1 11:11:47 ccs pulseaudio[5862]: [pulseaudio] main.c: Unable to
contact D-Bus: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable to
autolaunch a dbus-daemon\ without a $DISPLAY for X11

Since X is not running I am not surprised that it says there is no
display. But I see nothing about a card.
My /dev/dsp is:

Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. The question is:
How do
you spend it?
