arch installation

Howdy,

OK, I'm diving back in and thought I'd play with Archlinux. Did Slackware years and years ago, am familiar with Debian (but doesn't have software speakup on the install CD, I don't think), and, yeah. I needed another challenge.

So I have this Samsung netbook. Just for simplicity, I set up sda2 as Linux file system and sda3 as swap. sda1 is the Samsung recovery partition, which has Windows XP image on it, and I figured I'd better keep that for just in case. So never mind it.

So I put the talking arch on a 4gb USB drive. It boots. It's fantastic. I followed the directions, all a piece of cake, more or less. I got a system installed. I stuck a line in stab for the swap partition because there didn't seem to be such a line in it. I created an rc.conf because there wasn't one, and just had the line for 
MODULES=(speakup speakup_soft)
DAEMONS=(alsa espeakup)

Rebooting, the system appears to bootto a login: prompt, but no speech. 

I'm fairly sure I didn't miss a step. Iwent through it twice. Yes, I saved the alas state. Yes, I did the syslinux boot thing. There is an rc.d but there was no rc.conf or rc.local or any other rc.* files. Possibly no network connectivity, but no way to be certain. 

Any guidance would be appreciated.
