DOC/DOCS viewing and editing

Hello all:
I had a quick question. I'm losing my windows box for a while and was 
going to just jump to Linux cli. My biggest concern is being able to 
work on my papers for English. What do you guys use to be able to view 
doc/docx files? How do you write stuff so that when you print it will 
print it formatted nicely?
