Gnome Taking Over Terminal

Running Arch, I don't have the problem you describe where the console 
freezes when switching between GNOME and the text console. I can tell 
you that since GDM and GNOME now use logind for session management, 
GNOME is now placed on tty1. There may be a way to change this, but I'm 
not sure at this point how it would be done. I have no problem using it 
on tty1,so on my box, it can stay there.
