Lack of development in the Speakup modified Fedora distribution?

I corresponded with William Acker about Fedora 15 and Speakup. He replied,
in part, "Alt though Speakup is in the 2.6.38 kernel, it isn't turned on by
the good folks at The Fedora Project. Thanks for nothing, you guys. I'm
building Speakup enabled kernels for F15 so we can get you going once the
system is installed."
It was suggested that I get on the Fedora developers mailing list and raise
the matter. I hesitate because I'm only a very uninformed user regarding
the kernel. I don't even know what it means to turn Speakup on, never mind
why Arch Linux and apparently some other distros have speakup "turned on"
and Fedora does not. (I'd be grateful if somebody can explain it to me in
lay language.) I certainly appreciate Acker's intention to provide a
Speakup-enabled kernel, but I'd thought he wouldn't have to do that after
what I understood to be the recent, standard inclusion of Speakup in the
kernel.
Thanks for any thoughts or information.

Kelly,
This is great news. I may call on you when I make the switch. I am in the
process of backing up my current Linux environment and once it is done it is
then the time to make the switch. It make take a bit of time as we are also
in the middle of home renovations. So, my wife is setting different
priorities them I am.

I have used CentOS for a long time... I just compile my own kernel, and lock
the kernel package so it will not upgrade.
I have a dedicated machine I use for my personal host and I then can ssh to
any one of the dozens of servers I manage.
So I only have to keep one machine modified and I just use automated
kickstart installs to manage my servers.
Hope this helps.

Your observations are similar to what I am noticing. I have chosen to move
over to Centos even though it currently does not have Speakup support. I am
hoping to get Speakup support, but it is currently something that I don't
have the time to work on. It may be as simple as compiling the Centos kernel
and add in the Speakup modules. I am choosing Centos because it is the open
source version of Redhat Enterprise, and because I am familiar with Redhat
and Fedora.

Hello,
I've noticed or is it just mee, that the speakup modified distribtuion is
stuck on Fedora 13.
After that, all development just seems to have stopped where as the Fedora
core team have lept up to Fedora15 at the time of this writing.
Has anyone noticed the lack of development?
Or is it just me thinking that?
Thanks!
