I think you'll need to provide more details before anyone can help
you. Who is your internet provider? What modem, brand/model? What type
of connection does your provider use, bridged, pppoe/pppoa?

Since grml couldn't establish the connection automatically, I'm
guessing very likely that your modem doesn't hand out dynamic
addresses. In that case, I'd suggest installing the pppoe package

apt-get install pppoe

and reading /usr/share/doc/pppoe/README.DEBIAN.gz, which will tell you
what to do to configure it. This suggestion is tentative, since I
don't have answers to any of the above questions.
