espeakup and sound cards?

How did you tell espeak to switch soundcards?  AFAIK there is no device 
parameter on the command line.

I'm having a problem with espeakup and pulseaudio.  I've compiled 
portaudio with pulseaudio support.  Espeak talks just fine, but espeakup 
doesn't work at all and produces pages of erros about 'invalid 
samplerate'.  I think this may have something to do with how espeakup is 
interacting with the espeak library.
