arch talking install soundcard issue

Hello,
I'm trying to run the talking installer on an hp dm1z.  I don't have any 
speech output.  Alsa shows two sound cards.  ard0 is digital audio and 
card1 is unmuted and appears to be the one we should be using.  My guess 
is that espeakup is trying to use card0 which is not what we want.  

I have a braille display so I could stop espeakup and alsa, edit some 
files and try to restart them.  

Any thoughts?
