espeakup sharing soundcard

Hi.  Don't remember what distro you run.  On Debian, espeakup uses a version of portaudio with alsa as the back end.
I've never tried to make it use a specific card.  This desktop only has the onboard card.
It should use the devault card configured by your alsa setup.
