Perhaps someone else on this list might like to correct me if I'm wrong: but 
you might like to try following the synthesizer keyword with a space, 
followed by
speakup.ser=N
where N is a number from 0 to however many ports you have.  So, if you only 
have com1, you'd use 0, as in the unix world, all ports start at 0.

Sorry, at the moment things are a bit busy with a new guide dog, and I do 
not have immediate access to the help file right now.
