Man, I think the last Debian upgrade really trashed my system...

I have never seen anything like that.
What versions of the software are you running?

I don't remember how to downgrade a Debian machine, since that isn't what
I'm running.  Someone with more knowledge of Debian will hopefully
answer your question about downgrading.
