In my personal experience anything in the Intel family works well. I've
only really used the mini-PCI models found on laptops, but I believe the
same chipset is available in PCI and possibly also in USB models. I've
also used the Broadcom 43XX models successfully, again on a laptop.

As for distribution, well, I personally am an avid Gentoo user and I
generally don't recommend anything else. I know there are lots of people
who disagree with me on that front, and that's cool. It's just a
personal preference of mine. I find it serves all of my purposes, from a
Linux for beginners to an advanced Linux setup on a multi-user system. I
don't wanna spark a distro debate here, so I'll finish by saying that
the other distributions have their uses too.
