Numeric User Gone Bad?

What I did a while ago was to export UID and that seems to work.  I
inserted 'export UID' into my .bashrc for now and my test script shows
1000 now for the numeric value of UID where it was blank before.  This
is by no means the permenant fix but gets me by for now.  I don't
recall where user id numbers are published.  I know they are defined
in /etc/passwd but how the variable get exported or exposed to the
primary shell, well, that's over my head at the moment.
