debian sid upgrades

Lenny was no problem but the last time I tried a sid upgrade snd_seq 
wouldn't install and dpkg provided endless fatal errors.  Would it be 
possible to remove all multimedia packages from a lenny system then do a 
successful sid upgrade or do other problems await?  Also, does any way 
exist to adjust dpkg such that it generates only one fatal then gives up 
and either moves on with what else it can do or exits?
