New kernel problems

Jason,
I am making a slight change to what I said in the previous message.
I do this to compile and install a kernel:
cd /usr/src/linux
# configure the kernel
make # this compiles the kernel after configuring it
make modules_install install
emerge speakup
Everything else is the way I described it below.
